U.S. Authorities Target North Korean IT Fraud Operations

In a coordinated effort to combat a multi-year fraudulent scheme involving North Korean nationals, U.S. authorities have indicted two North Korean IT workers and several facilitators. The scheme, which has reportedly spanned multiple years, has generated significant revenue for the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) through the exploitation of remote freelance IT work. The FBI has highlighted that these IT workers have been involved in stealing source code to extort employers, while investigations have revealed a network of laptop farms facilitating this illicit activity. Recent sanctions have targeted both individuals and companies linked to these operations, asserting that the North Korean IT worker network also supports weapons of mass destruction programs. This crackdown has led to additional sanctions against companies in countries such as Laos and China, emphasizing the international scope of the issue. Reports of threats against Japanese companies, as well as links to a fraudulent crowdfunding project, further illustrate the extensive impact of these fraudulent schemes.
