Recent surveys and studies have revealed a troubling trend regarding food insecurity in Virginia, with over half of families with children affected. A statewide study indicates that 42% of all households in Virginia faced food insecurity in the past year. Food banks have reported increased demand, as lines at pantries are returning, while rising food prices and a decline in SNAP recipients have exacerbated the situation. Furthermore, a specific focus on the Blue Ridge region shows that more than one in three households experienced food insecurity. In response, a General Assembly panel is advocating for increased support to assist those in need.
