International Protections Strengthened for Sharks and Rays
In a landmark decision, governments worldwide have endorsed new international protections for more than 70 species of sharks and rays, addressing concerns over overfishing and the commercial exploitation of these creatures. This move includes the oceanic whitetip shark and various deepwater species, some of which are threatened by their use in cosmetics and culinary products. The recent CITES meeting marked a historic victory for marine biodiversity, culminating in stronger regulations aimed at preventing the extinction of these vital species. Conservationists hail this as a watershed moment in global shark conservation, encouraging further efforts to protect other threatened species.
