Human Infections of Bird Flu Confirmed in Washington State
Washington state is currently investigating several human infections related to avian influenza, with four farm workers in Franklin County testing presumptively positive for the H5 strain of the virus. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has deployed a team to assist with the investigation as this marks the first suspected cases of bird flu in humans in the state. The outbreak has also affected poultry, with reports of infections in both farm workers and commercial flocks, including approximately 800,000 infected poultry at an egg farm near Pasco. Concerns are rising over the potential for human transmission, as health experts assess the situation amid increased avian flu cases reported across the country.
