Trial of Sissonville Couple Accused of Child Abuse and Neglect Underway
The trial of a West Virginia couple, Whitefeather and Lantz, accused of forcing their adopted Black children into labor and subjecting them to neglect began recently, revealing harrowing testimonies from the children. The oldest child described a life filled with turmoil and neglect, stating she did not consider her adoptive mother as such. Jurors were shown surveillance footage showing the children being locked in a shed and forced to sleep on cardboard. Testimonies indicated that the children were monitored by cameras and subjected to back-breaking work. Law enforcement officials testified about the rescue operation and the conditions under which the children were living. The defense argued that the couple was overwhelmed and sought help for the traumatized children, but the prosecution maintains that the conditions amounted to abuse and human trafficking.
