ICE Fails to Proceed with Detention Center Plans Across Multiple Locations
Recent reports indicate that the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is abandoning its plans for detention centers in various states, particularly in Romulus, Michigan, and Salt Lake City, Utah. This decision follows significant lawsuits and public opposition from state officials, including Attorney General Dana Nessel, who expressed relief over the scrapping of the controversial detention facility in Romulus. In total, ICE is looking to offload seven warehouse facilities across the U.S. that it previously purchased for approximately $700 million. This includes the Salt Lake City site, which ICE had designated for a future detention center but is now seeking to sell after only three months of ownership. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) also announced plans to divest from proposed facilities in New Jersey and other states. This overall shift raises questions about the future of migrant detention practices in the United States as state leaders commend recent victories against these planned expansions.
