General Motors (GM) is making substantial job cuts across its manufacturing and technology divisions in response to a slowdown in electric vehicle (EV) demand. The company has announced plans to lay off more than 1,700 workers at plants in Michigan and Ohio, as well as thousands more at various sites, including a Detroit EV plant and a Georgia IT Innovation Center. In total, layoffs may affect over 5,500 employees as GM realigns its workforce amid challenges in the EV market. Factors such as regulatory changes and reduced consumer interest in electric vehicles have been cited as key reasons for these drastic measures.
