In a significant political upset, Nithya Raman has won the Los Angeles mayoral race, defeating incumbent Karen Bass. This victory marks a new era for progressive politics in the city, as Raman, a democratic socialist and the first South Asian mayor of Los Angeles, claims victory amid a tough electoral battle. Bass has conceded, pledging a smooth transition, while Raman promises to focus on pressing issues like homelessness, safety, and housing. As Raman holds her first news conference as mayor-elect, she faces tough challenges ahead, but her win signals a shift in Los Angeles political dynamics and a rising left in the United States.
