West Africa Regional Bloc Addresses Exit of Coup-Hit States
The West African regional bloc, ECOWAS, has approved an exit timeline for three member nations—Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger—following recent coups. These nations were granted six months to reconsider their decision to leave the organization, with leaders hoping to maintain regional stability. The bloc also emphasized the significance of a proposed superhighway connecting Ivory Coast to Nigeria as a means to rejuvenate economic ties. Meanwhile, Senegal is reportedly making progress in advocating for a resolution to the tensions with military leaders in the Sahel region, urging them to remain part of ECOWAS. An upcoming summit will further address ongoing financial and political turmoil in the region.
