In a recent crackdown on online scams, Cambodian authorities reported that 310,000 suspected scammers have left the country. However, many trafficking victims freed from scam compounds are now facing a new crisis, with some left homeless and vulnerable. The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) has warned of serious penalties for anyone linked to these scam hubs. Meanwhile, the central bank chief emphasized that Cambodia should not be treated as a scapegoat for the broader issue of online scams, highlighting the transnational nature of cybercrime. Currently, 19 foreign nationals are detained in connection with various cyber scam cases, as the situation continues to evolve.
