Hurricane Melissa Triggers Extensive Evacuations and Preparations for Naval Personnel
As Hurricane Melissa approaches, nearly 1,000 non-essential workers and military relatives from Naval Station Guantanamo Bay have been evacuated to NAS Pensacola. The evacuation comes as the hurricane threatens operations in the Caribbean, prompting the movement of several Navy ships. NAS Pensacola is actively assisting with housing for over 800 personnel and has set up an Emergency Family Assistance Center to support evacuees. Additionally, local food trucks have stepped in to provide meals for Naval Station staff, while donations pour in for pets transported from Guantanamo to Pensacola. The U.S. Navy is taking precautions as the hurricane moves towards the northern territories.
