U.S. Forest Service Calls on Resigned and Retired Firefighters to Address Wildfire Season
As the wildfire season approaches, the U.S. Forest Service is reaching out to former employees, specifically those who voluntarily resigned, urging them to return to assist in firefighting efforts. This call comes amid concerns raised by many federal firefighters who believe that the loss of around 5,000 employees could negatively affect the response to ongoing fire challenges. The Forest Service chief has expressed hope that both retired workers and those currently on leave will rejoin the ranks to bolster fire response capabilities. The agency has also provided guidance for participants in the Deferred Resignation Program, emphasizing the importance of experienced personnel to combat the increasing threat of wildfires.
