Global Decline in Drowning Deaths, Yet Vulnerable Populations at Risk

Recent reports highlight a decline in drowning deaths worldwide, yet a pressing public health concern remains for the most vulnerable populations, especially children. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), an alarming 30 individuals drowned every hour in 2021. Although countries like Bangladesh have seen a reduction in drowning incidents, projections suggest that over 7.2 million people, primarily children, will be at risk of drowning by 2050. The WHO has called for enhanced measures to prevent drowning, particularly in South-East Asia where urgent action is required to safeguard at-risk communities.
