The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has announced a substantial investment of $150 million in human-based research aimed at reducing reliance on animal models. In collaboration with the FDA, NIH is pledging flexibility and launching several initiatives focused on developing alternatives to animal testing in drug development. PETA and the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine have both expressed support for this investment, highlighting its potential to help meet animal reduction goals. The FDA has also proposed new guidance that encourages the adoption of non-animal methods by drugmakers and provides details on utilizing alternatives in early drug studies.
