King Charles III Sets a Precedent with Personal Tax Disclosures
In a historic move, King Charles III has publicly disclosed his personal tax bill, reportedly amounting to £12.9 million for 2024-25, making him the first British monarch to do so in the modern era. Since 2022, he has paid over £30 million in taxes, amounting to about $39.6 million. This disclosure, aligned with a push for increased transparency within the monarchy, also comes alongside revelations that funding for the royal family from taxpayers is expected to rise significantly, reaching £138 million amid ongoing refurbishments at Buckingham Palace. Prince William has also joined his father in sharing tax information, indicating a shift towards greater openness in royal finances. Critics, however, continue to question the costs associated with the monarchy, as funding is set to nearly double to £100 million by 2028.
