NTSB Urges Vulnerability Assessments for Numerous Bridges Nationwide Following Key Bridge Collapse
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has issued urgent recommendations for vulnerability assessments and safety inspections for dozens of bridges across the country after the recent Key Bridge collapse in Baltimore. Among the identified structures are three iconic bridges in New York City, several key bridges in the Philadelphia area—including the Walt Whitman and Ben Franklin bridges—, and major spans in Maryland and Delaware. The assessments are critical in evaluating risks, particularly concerns about ship strikes. A report highlighted that the Key Bridge was at a high risk of collapse prior to the incident, underscoring the need for immediate action to ensure public safety. The NTSB has included 68 bridges across 19 states in its assessment list, with fears that improperly evaluated bridges could lead to further catastrophic failures.
