Screwworm Outbreak Raises Concerns Across Multiple States

A resurgence of the New World screwworm is raising alarms in various U.S. states, particularly Texas, where confirmed cases have prompted concerns among pet owners and ranchers. The USDA is responding by funding inspections and research efforts. Both Texas and New Mexico are pushing for bipartisan support and funding to combat the outbreak, with New Mexico recently reporting its first case. As preventive measures are enacted nationwide, including new animal entry requirements in Arkansas and increased outreach efforts by the University of Arizona, experts warn that the flesh-eating pest could have significant implications for the livestock industry and crowded animal shelters. The UN has also launched a $1 million project aimed at containing the outbreak. Despite these efforts, officials are bracing for a prolonged battle against the invasive species, as its rapid spread is facilitated by organized crime and can even threaten human health.
