NTSB Urges Urgent Assessments of 68 U.S. Bridges Following Key Bridge Collapse
Nearly a year after the fatal collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore that claimed six lives, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has identified 68 bridges across 19 states that require urgent assessments for potential risks of collapse, particularly if struck by ships. The investigation revealed that the Key Bridge was nearly 30 times above the acceptable risk threshold at the time of its failure, highlighting severe oversights in vulnerability assessments by Maryland officials. Among those flagged for review are significant structures such as the Golden Gate Bridge and various others in the Philadelphia and New Jersey areas. The NTSB is calling for immediate action to prevent similar tragedies in the future and has committed to releasing further findings and safety recommendations.
