Research led by the University of Oregon has found that in authoritarian countries, institutional influence leads to AI-generated responses that align with governmental narratives. The analysis highlights how governments shape AI chatbot outputs by controlling the online information that these systems are trained on, essentially laundering propaganda through state-run media sources. This phenomenon is not limited to foreign LLMs; it also affects AI models based in the U.S., resulting in skewed interpretations based on media freedom and state influence across 37 countries. The findings stress the need for awareness regarding the data sources that inform AI technologies and their implications on public discourse.
