A recent study has found that wild chimpanzees consume the equivalent of two alcoholic drinks each day by eating fermented fruit. This behavior, which includes the ingestion of alcohol comparable to a pint of lager or two glasses of wine, suggests that chimps may experience mild intoxication. The findings illuminate potential roots of humanity’s affinity for alcohol, indicating that our attraction to drinking may be traced back to behavioral patterns observed in chimpanzees.
