U.S. Capitol Unveils Statue of Civil Rights Icon Barbara Rose Johns
The U.S. Capitol has unveiled a statue of Barbara Rose Johns, the civil rights activist who, at just 16 years old, led a walkout in 1951 to protest the deplorable conditions at her segregated high school in Virginia. This significant event in the fight against school segregation is now commemorated by a statue that replaces the former statue of Robert E. Lee. The unveiling ceremony was attended by prominent leaders including Congressman Hakeem Jeffries, who emphasized the importance of representing true patriots in the Capitol. Johns’ legacy as a champion of civil rights is now symbolically honored at this historic site.
