Hong Kong Sentences Journalists for Sedition in Landmark Case
In a significant ruling, a Hong Kong court has sentenced two former editors of the now-defunct outlet Stand News to prison terms for sedition. This landmark case marks the first time a journalist has been imprisoned under the sedition law since its implementation. One editor received a 21-month sentence, while another was jailed for 1 year and 9 months; however, the latter was released on health grounds. The sentences have raised concerns regarding press freedom in the region, with many critics labeling the verdict as an attack on journalistic integrity and a continuation of the crackdown on pro-democracy voices in Hong Kong.
