New York to Construct First Major Nuclear Power Plant in Over 15 Years

Governor Hochul has announced plans for New York to build one of the first new nuclear power plants in the U.S. in a generation. The state aims to develop a zero-emission advanced nuclear energy facility to provide power for approximately 1 million homes, particularly to support energy-hungry industries. This initiative comes shortly after the closure of the Indian Point nuclear power facility, and Hochul has directed the New York Power Authority to spearhead the project, emphasizing the state’s commitment to increasing its nuclear energy capacity. Although a specific location has yet to be determined, areas in upstate New York are being considered as strong candidates for the new plant.
