US Tariffs Create Turmoil in Indian Shrimp Industry
The imposition of US tariffs has severely affected the shrimp export sector in India, especially in Andhra Pradesh, where losses have been estimated at ₹25,000 crore. Many shrimp exporters have reported a 50% cancellation of orders as they pivot to new markets like China. The Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, Naidu, has called for immediate support from the central government, including a loan moratorium and GST waivers for affected aqua farmers. Similar concerns are echoed in Kerala, where authorities warn of potential losses between ₹2,500 to ₹4,500 crore, threatening traditional industries. As the situation escalates, Indian seafood exporters are scrambling to adapt amidst significant declines in exports and increased operational challenges.
