US Navy Embraces Trump-Class Battleships Amid High Costs and Staffing Challenges
The U.S. Navy is moving forward with plans for a new class of battleships, known as the Trump-class, which leaders hope will enhance naval power and tackle capacity limits currently faced by destroyers. However, the ambitious project comes with a hefty price tag, with estimates suggesting the first of these battleships could cost as much as $22 billion, potentially making it the most expensive warship in U.S. history. Secretary of the Navy John Phelan outlined the need for a substantial workforce, calling for the hiring of 250,000 new dockyard workers over the next decade to support the Golden Fleet initiative. While some naval officers have expressed skepticism regarding the feasibility of such a massive undertaking, proponents argue that the Trump-class could restore significant maritime firepower. The program, however, has sparked discussions about the strategic relevance of battleships in modern naval warfare and has drawn mixed responses regarding its potential effectiveness against evolving threats.
