Recent discoveries using advanced LiDAR technology reveal a sprawling ancient civilization beneath the Amazon rainforest, suggesting that a lost civilization may have supported up to 3 million people. Archaeologists have uncovered hundreds of ancient glyphs and tens of thousands of geometric earthworks, indicative of sophisticated societies that thrived in the region thousands of years ago. The findings indicate that there are over 20,000 precolonial earthworks and nearly 30,000 structures buried deep in the forest, challenging previous notions about the extent and complexity of human habitation in the Amazon. This ancient civilization, which has been linked to the Akiri civilization, is believed to have flourished for over 1,500 years, alongside other significant cultures such as the Maya.
