Surge in Executions of Ukrainian Prisoners of War by Russian Forces
Recent reports from Ukrainian human rights officials indicate a concerning increase in the execution of Ukrainian soldiers by Russian forces. Over the past three years, at least 177 Ukrainian prisoners of war have been executed, with a notable rise in these incidents documented in 2024. Ukrainian Human Rights Commissioner has highlighted that these executions are not isolated events but part of a disturbing trend. Newly surfaced videos have also raised alarms about the treatment of POWs, suggesting a coordinated strategy in the ongoing information war. Additionally, there are claims of coercion directed at POW families, pressuring them into spying for information about their loved ones. Amidst these violations, Ukraine is calling for international intervention from organizations such as the UN and ICRC.
