The Center for Whale Research has confirmed the death of J61, adding to the sorrow as researchers observe her carrying the carcass through the waters of Puget Sound. In 2018, Tahlequah was in the spotlight for carrying her dead calf for 17 days, capturing the nation’s heart. Now, with another loss, she has resumed this mournful behavior, prompting researchers to discuss the overall survival challenges faced by Southern Resident orca calves, with only about half surviving to maturity.
