Massive Reconstruction Effort Needed for Gaza Post-Conflict
Experts from the UN, World Bank, and EU estimate that the reconstruction of Gaza will cost around $70 billion and take decades to complete. The destruction has left over 80% of Gaza City’s buildings damaged, with a significant portion being completely destroyed. The humanitarian crisis is profound, as nearly 1.5 million Palestinians have been left homeless. The UN has expressed high hopes for international cooperation, with several countries indicating a willingness to help fund the recovery effort. However, experts caution that the effort cannot begin until the conflict has definitively ceased. In addition, the considerable debris—estimated at nearly 55 million tonnes—must be cleared before any meaningful reconstruction can take place. As the international community discusses the logistics and funding of this massive endeavor, challenges beyond financial resources remain pertinent.
