A Wisconsin state trooper, Carel Aaron Van Der Merwe, was arrested by ICE at an airport while boarding a domestic flight due to an expired visa and pending asylum case. Following backlash and intervention from Representative Van Orden, the trooper was confirmed to be released from custody. Reports indicate that he is now under an order of supervision after a significant and dramatic experience in ICE custody. There has been criticism directed at ICE regarding the arrest, with many questioning the appropriateness of targeting law enforcement officials.
