Promising Advances in Stem Cell Therapy for Type 1 Diabetes
Recent studies have shown significant progress in stem cell therapies aimed at treating Type 1 diabetes. Notably, Vertex’s islet cell therapy, VX-880, has been reported to restore endogenous insulin secretion, potentially reducing the need for injectable insulin. A London woman has successfully become insulin-independent after receiving a single dose of experimental manufactured stem cells. Additionally, Zimislecel has enabled insulin independence in several participants, illustrating the potential of these therapies to cure severe diabetes. These breakthroughs were highlighted at the ADA 85th Scientific Sessions, emphasizing the positive results from small trials and new drug developments in this field.
