Recent reports indicate a significant escalation in drone warfare between Russia and Ukraine, with Russia launching a record number of drones and missiles into Ukraine. In July alone, Russian forces unleashed approximately 6,400 drones, marking a staggering increase in aerial assaults. Ukrainian air defense units are struggling to cope with this new wave of sophisticated kamikaze drones, particularly the jet-powered Shahed models that are reportedly capable of hitting targets at speeds exceeding 500 km/h. Despite their efforts, Ukrainian defenders face persistent challenges, including overwhelmed resources and fatigue from continuous engagements. The situation is exacerbated by the evolution of Russia’s unmanned aerial capabilities, as they reportedly aim to create a drone empire involving over 900 companies. In response, Ukraine is developing innovative low-tech defense strategies, but the effectiveness of these methods against high-tech threats remains uncertain.
