CFPB Finalizes Oversight Regulations for Major Digital Payment Apps
The U.S. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) has finalized a new rule establishing regulatory oversight for major digital payment applications such as Apple Pay, Cash App, PayPal, and Zelle. The rule aims to protect personal data, reduce fraud, and prevent illegal debanking practices. As a result, these apps will now be treated similarly to banks, particularly if they handle over 50 million transactions annually. However, the CFPB has opted to exclude self-hosted crypto wallets from its regulatory reach. This marks a significant shift in how financial technology is monitored, placing increased scrutiny on tech giants within the payment sector.
