New $45 TSA Fee for Travelers Without REAL ID Takes Effect

Starting February 1, travelers attempting to fly without a REAL ID will face a new $45 fee implemented by the TSA. This regulation urges passengers to secure a compliant form of identification, as enforcement begins soon at various airports, including Mitchell Airport and Columbus. To alleviate potential confusion, the TSA has introduced a ConfirmID option, allowing some individuals to still fly without a REAL ID by paying the fee. Hundreds have rushed to obtain their REAL IDs before the deadline, as many are unaware that the absence of acceptable identification could lead to unexpected charges. Flyers are advised to prepare to either present a REAL ID or anticipate the new costs associated with alternative IDs.
