Federal Employees Experience Uncertainty as Shutdown RIFs are Rescinded
In recent developments, over 3,600 federal employees received notices that their shutdown-related reduction-in-force (RIF) actions have been rescinded, bringing some relief amid lingering uncertainty. This follows the issuance of guidance from the Air Force regarding backpay and telework for returning workers. Agencies have been instructed to cancel shutdown RIFs and reinstate affected employees with back pay. Meanwhile, laid-off employees from the GSA are advocating for their reinstatement, citing protections under the shutdown-ending deal. The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) has addressed benefits impacts as the shutdown concludes, stating that the open season for benefits will not be extended at this time. Guidance has also been provided on various management issues and considerations regarding leave as the shutdown ends.
