A comprehensive US report has brought to light the growing prevalence of romance scams on dating platforms like Tinder and Hinge, revealing that over 1.5 million scammers matched with users in recent time. The scams have reportedly caused Americans to lose billions of dollars, prompting congressional probes that faulted Match Group for inadequate scam prevention measures. A recent documentary highlights the financial and emotional toll on victims, one of whom was deceived by an AI scammer posing as a celebrity. Despite the alarming rise in scam-related incidents, including an eightfold increase in reported Tinder scams, many dating apps have failed to keep their fraud detection systems updated. In response to these revelations, Congress has passed a landmark law to enhance protections for online daters.
