The Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to South African jurist Navanethem ‘Navi’ Pillay, recognized for her significant contributions to human rights and international law. As the former International Criminal Court judge and former UN human rights chief, Pillay has been lauded for her advocacy for survivors of international crimes. The decision, however, has sparked political backlash, especially from Israel, which condemned the award, calling her anti-Israel stance a ‘grotesque weaponization’ of the Nobel Prize. Former President Donald Trump also criticized Pillay, referring to her as a ‘hater of America and Israel.’ Despite the controversy, Pillay has received widespread praise, humorously mentioning her potential to share the prize with Trump in her initial remarks.
