Escalating Violence in Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo as M23 Rebels Advance

The situation in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo has deteriorated significantly as M23 rebels, reportedly backed by Rwanda, are closing in on the key city of Goma. Recent clashes have resulted in the deaths of at least 13 foreign peacekeepers and numerous injuries among both peacekeeping and local military forces. Thousands of civilians are fleeing towards the border with Rwanda as intense fighting continues, with the UN expressing grave concern over the humanitarian crisis. The Congolese government has severed ties with Rwanda amid accusations of its involvement in the conflict. As the rebels capture strategic locations and threaten the provincial capital, an emergency Security Council meeting has been called to address the alarming situation.
