Minnesota Wildfires Prompt Widespread Evacuations and Closures
Severe wildfires are currently ravaging northern Minnesota, particularly impacting the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW), leading to a state of emergency declaration by Governor Tim Walz. Campers in the area have reported tense moments as flames approached, prompting expanded evacuation orders from regions east of Ely and Winton. With over 17 active fires burning and more than 33,000 acres scorched, the urgency has increased, with the National Guard mobilized to assist firefighting efforts. The Forest Service has temporarily closed the BWCA, marking only the third time in history that this popular wilderness area has been shut down. As smoke spreads and air quality deteriorates, local authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant amid the evolving wildfire situation.
