US Takes Emergency Measures Against New World Screwworm Outbreak

In light of the further northward spread of the New World Screwworm in Mexico, Secretary Rollins has ordered the closure of U.S. southern border ports to livestock trade. This decisive action has followed reports of a flesh-eating parasite prompting the U.S. to pause Mexican cattle imports once again. As part of an innovative approach to combat this threat, the government plans to breed billions of sterile flies and air-drop them over the Texas border to eliminate these harmful maggots. While cattle traders express concern over the ongoing border restrictions, Mexican officials, including President Claudia Sheinbaum, have criticized the U.S. response as exaggerated. There are plans for Mexico to open a sterile fly plant in 2026 to further combat this parasite.
