Severe Flooding Affects Southwest Virginia and Surrounding Areas

Several counties in Southwest Virginia are currently under a State of Emergency due to catastrophic flooding caused by excessive rainfall. Giles County Emergency Services is closely monitoring the situation as water levels rise in Kingsport and across the region. The flooding has led to widespread evacuations, particularly in Richlands, where residents in flood-prone areas have been urged to leave immediately. Governor Youngkin has requested an Expedited Major Disaster Declaration to facilitate federal assistance for affected communities, as rescues continue with over 100 people having been rescued from floodwaters. Emergency services, including swiftwater rescue teams from various localities, are actively responding to the crisis, while multiple road closures and shelter openings have been reported. The situation remains fluid with ongoing flash flood warnings and concerns about further severe weather development.
