Global Water Crisis Poses Significant Threat to Food Production and Economy
A recent series of reports highlight an unprecedented global water crisis that jeopardizes up to half of the world’s food production within the next few decades. This alarming situation stems from an unbalanced water cycle, driven by climate change and rising temperatures, which threatens the agricultural supply chain. It is projected that up to 8% of global GDP could be at risk due to this water crisis, especially in high-income countries. With one-quarter of the world’s crops now grown in areas vulnerable to water supply risks, urgent action is needed. The FAO has positively acknowledged the adoption of the Rome Declaration on Water Scarcity in Agriculture, while experts are calling for a global pact to address these pressing challenges effectively.
